In Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia's top police official announced on Friday (Feb 27) that authorities are looking into an alleged conspiracy to "topple the government and sabotage national stability."
Inspector-General of Police Mohd Khalid Ismail stated that the supposed plot involves a local influential figure and an international media agency. However, he did not disclose the identities of the individual or the media agency.
The investigation is being conducted under laws that prohibit undermining parliamentary democracy, an offense that could lead to a maximum jail term of 20 years upon conviction, according to Ismail.
Details about the alleged conspiracy have not been made public by the police.
During a regular press conference, Government spokesperson and Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil described the issue as "a very serious matter," but refrained from providing further details, stating that they trust the police to carry out a thorough investigation.
In a statement, the Attorney-General's Chambers emphasized the importance of conducting a comprehensive and professional probe without any interference.
