In a city characterized by its fast pace and hustle culture, the introduction of a sleep class feels almost revolutionary. Gymnation’s new ‘nap time’ sessions invite Dubai residents to swap their intense HIIT workouts for deep breaths, gentle stretches, and… a midday nap!
Shifting from Hustle Culture to Recovery Culture?
This unique gym initiative reflects the evolving wellness culture in 2026. “We understand why the concept brings a smile to people's faces initially,” explains Rory McEntee, CMO of Gymnation. “However, this class is not merely about paying to sleep; it’s about learning to disconnect in a dedicated environment.”

The fitness landscape in Dubai has long mirrored the city's energetic lifestyle, characterized by boot camps, long work hours, and constant goal-chasing. However, McEntee notes a cultural shift regarding productivity.
“In fast-paced cities like Dubai, there tends to be a mindset that equates productivity with always doing more,” he says. “Yet, science increasingly indicates that recovery is essential for optimal performance.”
The Art of Slowing Down
The 45-minute session is structured like a relaxation ritual. Participants engage in a series of gentle yoga-inspired stretches, breathwork, and guided meditation, accompanied by live handpan music. The goal is to transition the body from a sympathetic “fight or flight” response into a parasympathetic “rest and digest” state.
“Gentle stretching alleviates tension, breathwork lowers heart rate and cortisol levels, and the soothing sounds of the handpan help the brain enter slower, restorative patterns,” McEntee explains.

By the time participants reach the napping phase, their bodies are already physiologically prepared for rest, making it significantly easier to relax compared to lying awake at 1 AM, scrolling through cat videos.
The 'Luxury' of Sleep and Its Benefits
While napping in a gym might seem counterintuitive, Gymnation has crafted the experience to feel more like a spa than a studio. Classes take place in the brand’s Mind and Body studio, where each participant enjoys their own space complete with beds, duvets, pillows, and eye masks. The lighting is dimmed, the temperature is adjusted for comfort, and the group size is intentionally kept small.
To enhance the experience, Gymnation has collaborated with Dr. Gurveen Ranger, a consultant clinical psychologist at Sage Clinics. Ranger describes sleep as “the secret training session” necessary for muscle repair and hormone regulation.
“One of the biggest misconceptions,” she points out, “is that sleep is passive or optional, and that if you’re busy enough, you can sacrifice sleep for productivity. In reality, sleep is crucial for many processes that support physical gains and cognitive recovery.”
Additionally, participants will receive evidence-based strategies to improve their “sleep hygiene” at home, including reducing screen time, cutting back on caffeine, and establishing a nightly wind-down routine.
Relearning the Importance of Rest
For some, the notion of needing a class to “learn to nap” may seem odd at first. However, Ranger believes this is precisely the goal.
“Initiatives like a group sleep class emphasize that sleep has become a challenge for many to prioritize,” she notes. “The objective isn’t to require continuous supervision for rest, but to cultivate awareness about what proper rest feels like.”
