Health Advisory Amid Hazy Conditions in Singapore

As Singapore experiences hazy weather due to smoke, you may have noticed a burning odor outdoors.

The National Environment Agency (NEA) stated on Monday, March 30, that the situation has been worsened by strong winds and dry conditions.

According to NEA's haze microsite, the Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) levels in Singapore remain in the good to moderate range, staying below the unhealthy threshold of 101.

PM2.5 readings, which measure fine particles with a diameter of 2.5 micrometers or less, have also been reported at normal levels.

However, some individuals have reported feeling unwell due to the haze.

Local content creator Nicole Liel, residing in Yishun, mentioned in a TikTok video last week that she has been experiencing headaches.

Many netizens commented on her video, sharing similar symptoms like difficulty breathing and coughing.

On Reddit, some users have reported health issues related to the haze as well.

One Redditor noted: "I have been sneezing non-stop these few nights, constantly blowing my nose... I woke up this morning with itchy nostrils and a mild burning sensation."

According to CNA, clinics in Singapore have seen an uptick in haze-related cases, with some reporting a 20 percent increase in patient visits over the past three months.

In addition to respiratory issues, people are also experiencing itchy eyes and skin flare-ups.

How to Protect Yourself from Haze

How can individuals safeguard their health during this period?

HealthHub recommends checking hourly PM2.5 readings and daily PSI levels before engaging in outdoor activities like running or walking.

While it remains safe to partake in outdoor exercises if PSI and PM2.5 levels are normal, the Ministry of Health (MOH) encourages individuals to stay hydrated if they experience symptoms like a dry or itchy throat.

If outdoor air quality deteriorates, it is advisable to stay indoors and close all doors and windows to minimize exposure to haze particles. While air conditioners can aid in air circulation and cooling, using an air purifier is recommended to further decrease indoor particle levels.

If the PSI reading exceeds 300 and you need to go outside, be sure to wear an N95 mask, which can filter out PM2.5 haze particles. Individuals with chronic lung or heart conditions, as well as the elderly and pregnant women, should also consider wearing an N95 mask when the PSI reading surpasses 200.

Although regular surgical masks are not effective in filtering fine particles, they can still provide a barrier between the wearer's mouth and nose and larger irritants in the air, according to the MOH.

Those with chronic heart and lung conditions, as well as children and the elderly, should take extra precautions during this time, even if pollution levels are not elevated.

This includes the aforementioned measures, along with ensuring that medications are easily accessible.

If you experience symptoms or feel unwell, seek medical attention promptly.
