A 33-year-old man, Amirul Hafiz Omar, tragically lost his life on Sunday, March 29, while on his way to purchase a textbook for his eldest son. Amirul, a devoted father of three young children aged two to nine, was struck by a car driven by a male driver in his twenties.
Illyasa Saipuzzaman, Amirul’s friend of 11 years, shared with Malaysian publication Harian Metro that Amirul worked two jobs—during the day at a warehouse and as a part-time delivery rider at night—to support his family. "We've worked together for about 11 years; he's a very helpful person. If there's a difficult task or someone in need, he will be one of the first to show up," Illyasa recalled.
Family Faces Heartbreaking Reality
Meanwhile, Amirul's nine-year-old son, Muhammad Aqif Amsyar, is struggling to process his father's death after being shown a video of the tragic accident, which depicted Amirul spinning through the air before landing on the roof of a car. His mother, Nor Nadia Abdul Majid, 32, told the New Straits Times that Aqif remarked, "Mama, Papa is hurt," after watching the video.
"He spun around almost 10 times," she said, adding that Amirul weighed 120kg, making the impact all the more severe. Amirul had recently taken up part-time work as a delivery rider about two months prior, and Nor Nadia also began working part-time at a courier company to help support their household. "Everything has now changed. I've lost my husband—my source of support," she expressed, worrying about her children's future and education, saying, "They are still very young."
Gifted Motorcycle Turns Tragic
In an ironic twist, the motorcycle Amirul was riding was a gift from his wife, given in November 2022. Nor Nadia shared on Facebook that she had seen Amirul browsing motorcycle listings every night and wanted to fulfill his dream. "Consider this a gift for taking good care of our family and carrying out your responsibilities without complaining, including dealing with this wife's antics," she affectionately wrote.
On Monday, Malaysian Transport Minister Anthony Loke expressed that the government takes the incident seriously, stating there would be no leniency for individuals found driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. He also mentioned that the ministry is contemplating amendments to the Road Transport Act to require offenders to compensate victims' families, in addition to serving prison sentences.
Details of the Incident
In videos that have gone viral on social media, a grey Honda City can be seen overtaking two cars at high speed just after the entrance to a local government office. This reckless maneuver led to a head-on collision with Amirul's motorcycle, which attempted to evade the car at the last moment. The force of the collision sent Amirul spinning through the air before he landed forcefully on the roof of one of the cars. The driver of the car, who is currently in custody, later tested positive for alcohol and drugs.
