How to Invest in Gold in Singapore (2026)

In recent years, gold has once again taken centre stage in global financial markets. The precious metal reached record-breaking levels in 2025, attracting investors worldwide who were seeking stability during a period of economic uncertainty. In Singapore, interest surged dramatically. Demand for gold bars and coins jumped close to 50%, reaching one of the highest levels ever recorded locally.

Despite the rapid price rise, enthusiasm for gold has not faded. Even after a short-term pullback in prices caused by currency fluctuations and shifting interest rate expectations, gold continues to draw attention from investors. Walk into bullion shops or jewellery retailers in Singapore today and you will still see steady foot traffic. Dealers have even increased their inventory to meet ongoing demand.

What’s particularly interesting is the growing interest among younger investors. While gold has traditionally been popular among older generations, many first-time investors are now adding it to their portfolios as they look for ways to navigate uncertain global markets. With geopolitical tensions and economic volatility continuing to dominate headlines, gold’s reputation as a safe and stable asset remains strong.

For anyone curious about whether gold belongs in their investment strategy, understanding the different ways to invest in the precious metal is an important first step.

One of the most traditional methods is purchasing physical gold. Investors often buy gold bars or bullion coins, which represent the purest form of ownership. Some people prefer holding the metal directly because it offers a tangible asset that can be stored privately. In Singapore, banks and authorised dealers sell investment-grade gold bars and coins. Once purchased, investors can store them at home or in secure bank deposit boxes. While jewellery is also made of gold, investment bars and coins are usually preferred due to their higher purity and lower design premiums.

Another option that removes the hassle of storing gold is the purchase of gold certificates. Instead of taking physical possession, investors receive documentation confirming ownership of a specific quantity of gold. These certificates can often be exchanged later for either physical bullion or cash, depending on the investor’s preference. This method allows investors to benefit from gold price movements without needing to manage storage or insurance.

Some banks in Singapore also offer gold savings accounts. These accounts function similarly to regular savings accounts, except the balance is denominated in gold instead of currency. Investors can buy or sell gold directly through their bank’s digital platform, with the value of their holdings reflected in grams of gold. Because there is no physical delivery involved, transactions are typically quick and convenient. For many investors who prefer simplicity, this option provides a straightforward way to gain exposure to gold.

Another increasingly popular method is investing through exchange-traded funds (ETFs) that track the price of gold. These funds are traded on stock exchanges, allowing investors to buy and sell shares just like regular stocks. Gold ETFs are often chosen by investors who want liquidity and flexibility without dealing with physical metal. They also allow individuals to include gold in a diversified investment portfolio alongside equities and other assets.

Investors may also choose to buy shares in companies involved in the gold industry. Mining companies, exploration firms, and gold producers tend to perform well when gold prices rise. Although this approach does not involve owning the metal directly, the performance of these companies is often closely linked to movements in the gold market.

More experienced traders sometimes explore the gold market through futures, options, commodities trading or forex markets. These instruments allow investors to speculate on price movements over shorter periods of time. However, they generally involve higher risk and are usually better suited for those with significant trading experience.

The reason gold continues to attract investors is closely tied to its long-standing reputation as a safe-haven asset. During periods of political tension, economic downturns or financial market instability, many investors shift part of their portfolio into gold. Historically, when stock markets weaken or currencies lose purchasing power, gold often maintains or increases its value.

Another important factor is inflation protection. Over long periods of time, gold has maintained relatively stable purchasing power. While currencies may lose value due to inflation, gold tends to retain its worth, which is why it is sometimes referred to as a “store of value”. This characteristic makes it an appealing hedge for investors concerned about rising living costs or currency fluctuations.

Diversification is also a key advantage. By adding gold to an investment portfolio that already includes stocks or bonds, investors can spread risk across multiple asset classes. When one sector performs poorly, another may perform better, helping to balance overall returns.

Looking at historical data provides further insight into gold’s long-term performance. Over the past three decades, gold prices have experienced ups and downs, but the overall trend has been upward. In the mid-1990s, gold was priced at just under US$400 per ounce. Over time, global financial crises, inflation concerns and economic shifts pushed prices significantly higher.

By the late 2010s, gold began another strong upward trend. The metal gained further momentum during global economic disruptions and continued rising in the years that followed. By 2024, gold had already reached new highs, and in 2025 it surged dramatically again, climbing more than 40% within a single year.

The long-term potential of gold becomes clearer when looking at simple investment examples. If someone had purchased 10 ounces of gold in the mid-1990s at around US$384 per ounce, the total cost would have been approximately US$3,841. Based on today’s much higher price levels, that same amount of gold would now be worth tens of thousands of dollars, representing substantial long-term growth.
