Light bulb moment: How to lower your utility bills as electricity and gas tariffs increase

Households may soon feel a slight pinch in their monthly expenses as utility costs continue to edge upward. While recent increases in electricity and gas tariffs appear modest, experts warn that fluctuations in global energy markets could lead to further adjustments in the months ahead. For many families, even small increases can accumulate over time, making it more important than ever to manage energy consumption wisely.

Singapore’s reliance on imported natural gas means that global developments can directly influence local electricity prices. As energy costs remain unpredictable, households are encouraged to adopt practical habits that can help reduce overall consumption and keep bills under control.

One of the easiest ways to start saving is by switching to LED lighting. Compared to traditional bulbs, LED lights consume significantly less energy and last much longer, making them a cost-effective upgrade over time despite a slightly higher upfront cost.

Another effective strategy is investing in energy-efficient appliances. Items such as refrigerators and air conditioners are used daily, so choosing models with higher energy efficiency ratings can lead to noticeable savings. Although these appliances may cost more initially, their lower energy usage can reduce long-term expenses.

It is also important to avoid leaving devices on standby mode. Many appliances continue to draw power even when not actively in use. Turning them off completely at the power source, especially overnight, can help eliminate unnecessary energy waste.

Laundry habits can make a difference as well. Washing clothes with cold or room-temperature water not only protects fabrics but also reduces the energy required to heat water, which is one of the most energy-intensive parts of the washing process.

Even small adjustments in how appliances are positioned can have an impact. For example, ensuring that refrigerators have enough space for ventilation and are kept away from heat sources can improve efficiency and reduce power consumption over time.

Toward the latest update, electricity tariffs are set to rise by around 2.1 per cent between April and June 2026, with average monthly bills for some households increasing slightly. Gas prices are also expected to climb during the same period, and further changes may occur later in the year due to global energy conditions. With these developments in mind, adopting simple energy-saving habits now can help households stay ahead of rising utility costs.
