Gary Woodland’s return to the PGA Tour winner’s circle signifies much more than merely claiming a trophy. Nearly seven years after his U.S. Open victory, the 41-year-old golfer has reestablished himself among the elite of the game, culminating a remarkable comeback following brain surgery in late 2023 and his subsequent struggle with PTSD.
At the Texas Children’s Houston Open, Woodland’s performance was driven by sheer power. This season, he has emerged as one of the Tour’s longest hitters, leading in both driving distance and clubhead speed, with his strength off the tee playing a crucial role in securing his fifth PGA Tour victory.
Ranking among the leaders with an impressive average driving distance close to 322 yards, Woodland expertly combined aggression with control, gaining strokes and creating scoring opportunities throughout the tournament. Central to his success is a driver setup that distinctly stands out even among professional golfers.
Woodland has adopted a non-traditional approach, favoring a back-weighted driver design that aligns with his natural swing characteristics.
“This is my 18th year on Tour, and the drivers that I’ve performed well with have always been back-weighted,” Woodland shared with GOLF in February.
“While many players prefer front weight to minimize spin and maximize distance, I’ve found success with a back-weighted setup. Last year, I struggled with spin issues, but after trying various drivers, I found that their Max K driver offered low spin for me.”
This configuration, designed around a deep center of gravity, features a notably low loft and a heavy shaft, enabling Woodland to optimize speed while maintaining control. It reflects a player who has an intimate understanding of his swing and is willing to trust his instincts over conventional wisdom.
Behind the scenes, Woodland and his team have continuously fine-tuned his equipment to match his evolving swing dynamics, especially as he has regained speed and strength throughout the past year.
These adjustments have been ongoing, as Woodland searches for the right balance between feel and performance. As his speed increased, certain setups became insufficient, prompting further modifications.
With renewed speed and confidence, Woodland now feels more at ease than ever with the demanding equipment.
Yet beyond the technical aspects, this victory holds deeper significance. Woodland’s journey back from serious health challenges serves as a poignant reminder of the resilience required at the highest levels of sports. Performances like his transcend statistics, offering insight into the challenges athletes must overcome to compete again, let alone achieve victory.
